Where do I start?
Thank you for considering HOM as your guide to American Mahjong! You’re in the right place.
There are two formats to learn with HOM. Choose Private or Open:
Private Instruction: You gather a group of participants and host the private instruction sessions at a location of your choice. You will select the dates and times for the event. At the hosted location, HOM will provide the set up and instruction materials.
Open Instruction: Sign up individually to attend a scheduled HOM instruction at a location offered by HOM on the dates/ times offered. Once registration is complete, paid for and confirmed, HOM will provide the location address in the Lake Claire/ Candler Park neighborhood. HOM will provide the location, set up, instruction materials, and lite snacks and drinks.
What experience do I need to have? Both formats offer opportunities for all levels of experience:
Introduction: For those that are new to Mahjong, the Introduction offering teaches the foundations of the equipment, tile identification, NMJL Card introduction, and practice of the game. NMJL will be provided and available for purchase.
Refinement: Mastered the basics and want to learn more about the strategy and etiquette of the game? Refinement will cover a deep dive of the NMJL Card, categories, and hands. You develop your intuition for organizing and making sense of your tiles, and be and nimble enough to change your hand and be thoughtful about your discards. You will understand the mechanics and etiquette of gameplay and establish house rules. Dive in to scoring and learn how to modify the game for 2, 3, or 5 players.
Guided Play: Experience independent game play with the guidance of an instructor. A review of dealing and directions will be provided. Ask questions and learn by doing with fellow Mahjong enthusiasts.

Private + Introduction: Delve into the exciting world of mahjong! This 4-hour course for beginners is broken into two 2-hour sessions and will equip you with the knowledge to start your mahjong journey. Grab your group of friends and let Celesta do the rest. Sessions are hosted in the location of your choice. Includes table set up, HOM Playbook, House Rules Guide, use of and option to purchase NMJL card. There are 2 sessions (2 hours each) for 4 hours total. Best for 8-16 participants.
Private + Refinement: Ready to elevate your mahjong game? If you've mastered the basics and are ready to take your skills to the next level, the refinement class is for you. Celesta will delve deeper into advanced strategies, helping you refine your tile recognition, optimize your discards, and develop winning tactics. Get ready to transform from a mahjong enthusiast into a strategic force to be reckoned with! Private instruction covers a review of the fundamentals and dives into the NMJL card, how to choose a hand, defensive discarding, and reminders of game etiquette. Includes table set up, use of and option to purchase NMJL card.
Open + Introduction: Sign up and attend the Introduction session with others that are new to the game. Select your date and time from the schedule and attend at a HOM location in the Lake Claire/ Candler Park neighborhood. Address will be provided after registration and payment are confirmed. Includes table set up, HOM Playbook and House Rules Guide and use of and option to purchase NMJL card.
Open + Refinement: In a welcoming and collaborative environment, we'll explore all aspects of the game. Experienced players can brush up on their skills while offering guidance to beginners, creating a space for mutual learning and enjoyment. Includes table set up, use of and option to purchase NMJL card.
Guided Play: New to mahjong but eager to experience the thrill of the game? Look no further than guided play! In this supportive environment, you'll get hands-on experience with guidance. Includes table set up, use of and option to purchase NMJL card.
